Visit to Washington D.C. Summer Interns

APEX was in Washington D.C. over July 11-12 visiting student interns and alumni!

The central event was the alumni and intern gathering at Wiley Rein law office on K Street (thanks to Doug Wiley ’85!).  17 people present, including Ryan Ozar from APEX and Heidi McCormick, Director of Alumni Relations.  The seven students at the gathering t were:

  • Daniel Cohen – APEX Fellow at Public Citizen
  • Savannah Glidewell – Shepherd student at Human Rights Watch
  • Jacquelyn Hannan –  at Financial Services Roundtable
  • Jubilate Lema –  Emerging Markets Private Equity Association
  • Zac Sessa – APEX Fellow at the Department of Defense
  • Ariel Veroske – APEX Fellow at WETA digital media office
  • Ben Taylor – intern in Leesburg, VA

Of the alumni present, we had a trustee, Jayne Hart Chambers ’76, speak to the group about the College’s perspective on the value of experiential learning.  We also had other alumni, like Barry Eisenberg ’85, speak about their experiences with internships as undergraduates.  Though there was a bit of alumni addressing the whole group, most of the evening was in small groups conversing and talking about work and Wooster.

I also had chance to also conduct site visits with three APEX Fellows: Rita Frost (with D.C. Divest, No Impact Project, Eco-Women) at a coffee shop using sustainable energy sources, Zac Sessa at The Pentagon, and Ariel Veroske at WETA in Arlinton, VA.  Please see the photos below.

What a great trip! The connections that were made between students, alumni, and APEX staff were very valuable.  The conversations we were able to have with the students could not have been communicated over phone or email.  I look forward to hearing from these students once they return to campus in the fall.
