What initially started as an unpaid summer experience for APEX (Advising Planning and Experiential Learning) Fellow Kevin Smith, turned into a paid product research assistant position by end of the summer before his junior year. Smith, a chemistry major from New York City, NY, plans to work in the pharmaceutical industry after college. In order to better prepare himself for that, he hoped to gain some experience over summer and began looking for places to intern at, until he finally found one that fit his needs perfectly.
Right here in Wooster, Kevin found 3i, a company focused on the production of organic dietary supplements, providing him with the perfect opportunity to gain experience in his field of interest. Kevin explained in layman’s terms, “My job is to take materials that are normally oil soluble and make them water-soluble by using [a technique called] nanodispersion.” His work turned out to be beneficial for him and the company, which is why 3i decided to hire him for the rest of summer while he continued his work there. “APEX helped provide me with the funding I needed to follow this interest I had,” says Kevin.
